The idea behind Terra & Light

Hi, I’m Michelle.

Long before I ever made candles, I loved them.

Friends and family always knew they were the easiest gift to buy me. Whether it was Christmas, a birthday or simply because they’d seen one they thought I’d love, candles became part of my everyday life.

After a stressful day, I’d light a candle.
After cleaning the house, I’d light a candle.
Before settling down with a good book, I’d light a candle.

It wasn’t really about the candle.

It was about how it made me feel.

That simple ritual of lighting a flame and breathing in a familiar scent had an incredible way of helping me switch off the noise and enjoy the moment I was already in.

A few years ago, while reading a novel, I came across a character who made candles as a way to relax and process difficult periods in her life.

Until then, I’d never really considered that people made candles themselves.

Curiosity quickly turned into passion.

I bought my first candle-making kit, poured my first candle and completely fell in love with the process.

The more I learned, the more I realised I wanted to create something different.

Not simply beautiful candles.

Thoughtful candles.

I began researching ingredients and discovered there were better choices available — plant-based waxes, carefully selected fragrance oils and materials that felt more aligned with the kind of home I wanted for myself, my family and our Cockerpoo, Luna.

The choices behind each candle matter to me — from the ingredients I use to the way they’re made and packaged, and the way the business can give something back too.

That is why Terra & Light is built around making thoughtful choices wherever possible. Not because perfection exists, but because I believe small choices, made consistently, can make a meaningful difference.

That philosophy extends beyond the products themselves.

Giving back has become one of Terra & Light’s own rituals, supporting organisations working to protect woodland, care for our oceans and support communities.

Today, every candle is still hand-poured in small batches here in Oxfordshire.

Not because handmade is fashionable.

But because intention has always mattered more to me than scale.

Terra & Light was never created simply to sell candles.

It was created to help people make everyday life feel just a little more meaningful.

The first coffee of the morning.
Fresh sheets on the bed.
Lighting a candle while dinner cooks.
Opening the windows on a spring afternoon.
Sitting down with a book at the end of the day.
Lighting a candle before friends arrive.

These aren’t grand occasions.

They’re the moments that shape everyday life.

Through thoughtfully crafted home fragrance, I want to help you notice those moments, enjoy them a little more deeply and create a home that feels warm, welcoming and thoughtfully lived in.

I don’t create the ritual.

I simply make it a little more meaningful.
